Advancing Intercity Safety for India’s Vande Bharat Chair Car Fleet
Overview
As part of India’s sweeping rail modernisation strategy to connect major economic hubs, the Vande Bharat Express trains have set a new benchmark for premium, daytime semi-high
-speed intercity travel. Central to this fleet is the Chair Car (CC) – the standard, air-conditioned, seating-only class engineered to maximise passenger throughput while delivering a highly modern travel experience.
Designed specifically for daytime routes, the Vande Bharat Chair Car features seating equipped with adjustable backrests, overhead luggage racks, charging ports, reading lights, and automatic doors.
In late 2024, the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala (RCF) initiated plans to expand this prestigious platform by manufacturing next-generation Vande Bharat Chair Car trainsets. To support these high-capacity configurations of up to a maximum 20-car formation, RCF required a highly sophisticated Crash Energy Management (CEM) system.
Oleo India was selected to design, manufacture, and supply the high-performance crash buffers needed to safeguard these advanced passenger fleets.
Challenge
Expanding the Vande Bharat platform into high-capacity Chair Car formations introduced distinct operational and engineering demands:
- High-Capacity Formation Dynamics: Because the 3+2 Chair Car configuration accommodates a dense passenger volume, managing kinetic energy dissipation across extended formations (up to 20 cars) requires precise, sequential absorption to prevent coach overriding during an impact
- Stringent Regulatory Compliance: The entire energy absorption framework was engineered and strictly validated in accordance with global EN 15227 crashworthiness standards
- Accelerated Design Timeline: The project demanded rapid technical evaluation, simulation, and deployment to align with RCF’s aggressive schedules
Solution
Oleo India worked in close collaboration with the RCF engineering team, adopting a virtual-first approach to accelerate the design and validation phases. By leveraging advanced DigitalTrains™ simulation tools, the team modeled complex multi-car impact scenarios to optimise the crash energy management system before physical manufacturing began.
Following successful technical evaluations, Oleo India was awarded the contract in April 2025. The company designed, manufactured, and supplied a total of 400 specialised crash buffers, tailored for both the leading ends and the intermediate couplings of the trainsets:
- 20 nos. Front Crash Buffers 815 kJ per buffer
- 380 nos. Intermediate Crash Buffers 65 kJ per buffer
Conclusion
This project marks another stellar milestone for Oleo India’s growing footprint in the region. In April 2026, RCF successfully rolled out the first 16-car formation Vande Bharat Chair Car trainset equipped with Oleo’s certified safety systems.
The trainset has now moved into its next phase, entering rigorous field trials conducted by railway authorities to validate its long-term endurance before officially entering public passenger service. By combining predictive digital twinning with robust manufacturing heritage, Oleo India continues to de-risk high-capacity rail operations, protecting rolling stock and passengers alike during this exciting era of rail revolution.
