Elevating Rail Safety for Next-Generation Sleeper Trains
Overview
As India undergoes a major rail revolution aimed at modernising infrastructure, reducing travel times, and enhancing passenger comfort, the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains represents a premier milestone for the nation’s network.
In 2023, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) awarded a contract to BEML to manufacture the first 10 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets (each in a 16-car formation).
Engineered for long-distance travel, these next-generation trains demanded an uncompromised focus on ride quality, passenger safety, and stringent global crashworthiness standards.
To achieve this, Oleo India was selected to deliver the high-performance Crash Energy Management (CEM) buffer systems required to protect the fleet and passengers.
Challenge
The introduction of higher-speed sleeper trainsets brought forward sophisticated engineering and regulatory challenges that required a modern, data-backed safety approach:
- Meeting Global Crashworthiness Standards: The safety systems needed to comply fully with rigorous international EN15227 crashworthiness standards.
- Complex Force Distribution: The 16-car trainset formation required two distinct engineered tiers of energy absorption – one to handle massive impact energy at the front of the train, and another to manage kinetic forces sequentially between individual coaches.
- Strict Independent Validation: To be cleared for public service, the components had to satisfy the stringent validation requirements of BEML, ICF and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
Solution
Oleo collaborated closely with BEML and their design consultants, utilising a virtual -first approach to optimise the train’s safety profile. Leveraging advanced DigitalTrains™ simulation tools, the engineering teams precisely modeled dynamic crash scenarios to design a tailored CEM solution.
Oleo was awarded the contract in 2024 and supplied a comprehensive framework of 640 high-capacity crash buffers, engineered at Oleo’s UK Centre of
Excellence:
- 40 nos. Front Crash Buffers 815 kJ per buffer
- 600 nos. Intermediate Crash Buffers 65 kJ per buffer
Engineering and Field Trials
Following type-testing in the UK – witnessed and certified by ICF, RDSO and BEML officials – the crash buffers were physically installed in December 2024. Proving long-term reliability required endurance; the components successfully completed a full year of rigorous field trials and consecutive inspections by Indian Railway authorities throughout 2025.
Conclusion
The project has culminated in an outstanding success for the evolution of Indian Rail. Early 2026 the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) officially cleared the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains for public service.
